The Light at the End of the Tunnel (Future Coaster News!)

Off-Season Detective Work

I’ll admit that, while I’m crazy for the park, I find it far too boring to weed through city documents for clues or drag my butt near a closed amusement park to snoop around. Luckily, there are people more dedicated than I.

American Coaster Enthusiasts Canada posted a link to a document from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority that gives us major clues about what’s about to happen. A direct link to the document is here and the pages we are interested in are 45 and 46. Here are a few interesting quotes from the document:

The permit will be issued for the period of January 12, 2018 to January 11, 2020 in accordance
with the following documents and plans which form part of this permit

The permit is already valid and remains valid until 2020. My assumption is that these permits are issued in yearly intervals and that the construction would be wrapped up way before January 2020… like April 2019.

The proposal is to alter a waterway and construct in the Regional Storm Floodplain of a tributary
of the Don River in order to facilitate the construction of a new roller coaster at Canada’s
Wonderland. A low-flow by-pass channel is proposed around a current on-line pond to facilitate
the construction of a ride tunnel within the pond and regulatory floodplain. In addition, nine
support piers are proposed within the regulated area.

Here’s the juiciest part of what we care about. The document confirms an actual roller coaster with a tunnel within a pond and that the area will see 9 support columns.

The proposed site is located at the south end of Canada’s Wonderland, within an online pond, north of an existing online stormwater pond. The subject site is currently manicured lawn and an on-line pond.

This part pinpoints the site in the park, although I am a bit confused by some of the wording. I’m understanding the “existing online stormwater pond” would be the one that Behemoth is next to so north of that would be the pond Vortex sits on. It also states that the subject site includes a manicured lawn, which would be the one next to Vortex. Here’s a graphic I made to illustrate:

The location of the makers we saw before the 2017 season ended and the construction we’ve seen documented over on the canadaswonderlandfan Instagram page would also confirm this to be the spot, even if I may have confused certain things referred to in the document…

It’s exciting times to be a Wonderland fan with all of the construction happening! Shoutout to ACE and canadaswonderlandfan on Instagram for all of the information!

So what do we all think about this latest menu? I’ve got some notes:

  • Keep in mind that the meal plan menu can be updated without notice.
  • There are no more additional fee upgrades which was introduced last season.
  • My two favourite meals are no longer on the list, those being the curried beef at Backlot Cafe and the chicken nuggets at Chicken Shack. I hope that they’ll be added back onto the menu by the time the park opens for the season.
  • Backlot Cafe has also dropped the Mexican station from the meal plan. This is something I can understand since that station consistently has a line. La Cantina now offers burritos which makes me feel like they’re trying to shift some of the crowd over there. I was impressed by the quality at La Cantina so I have no issue with this.
  • I like that Alpen Cheesery is expanding with new toppings (butter chicken!!) and sandwiches with fries. I hope this brings more people to it as I found there was never much of a line at it which I’d assume caused it to remain closed for periods during the past season.
  • The pizza combo is back down to a single slice, though that’s what they had listed at the beginning of last year but it remained at two slices in the park. I hope the case is the same for 2018.
  • With hot dogs now at Coasters but not on the plan at Expo Snacks, I’m curious if there’s any changes to the menu going on at Expo Snacks…
  • It’s nice to see a burger from Muskoka Craft Burger and Beer on the meal plan, though I wish it would come with chips from the Chippery instead. Those were delicious the last time I tried them!
  • On the topic of food (and half avoiding the political topic of raising minimum wage), I’m hoping that this year will be the one where they start bringing more technology to food service. I think there’s a lot of potential in the app where it could see things like up-to-date menu availability, food location operating times, and mobile ordering.

👋 That’s it for now!

Thanks for visiting the blog! Be sure to check by as more gets discovered on the Wonderland website which will bring us into the new season of trip reports, eventually. See you later!

CoasterCircuits November 2017 Update

We’re onto CoasterCircuits blog #4 now. Let’s go!

CoasterCircuits Blog is Back at CoasterCircuits.com

Back in June, my websites were hacked. I figured they targeted my [possibly outdated] self-hosted WordPress blog to get in. I lost confidence in hosting the blog myself so I opened up a free one at WordPress.com.

I’m ready to try again.

I do prefer to host the blog myself because it gives me extra flexibility with themes and plugins. I’ve tried to take some steps to keep the site secure to prevent anything bad from happening again. Let’s hope for the best.

I’ll be continuing on as usual. I can’t wait to write trip reports again when the 2018 season rolls around. Until then, it’ll be quiet unless I have something to write about. I may do updates here regarding my Wonderland website. Speaking of which…

The “Canada’s Wonderland Source” Update and Plans

The Canada’s Wonderland Source is a database of information which grew quite significantly over this past summer. I’m pretty happy with the way things are going but I also think it’s time for a bit of a change.

While there has been many updates to the code over the years, it naturally has become quite cluttered which gets in the way of doing certain things I’d like to do with the site. That’s why I’m going to do a big clean-up. The design of the site will remain the same but there are many areas, especially behind-the-scenes, which will see some streamlining.

As for the content of the site itself, I want to focus more on trip planning which will help make the site more engaging and interactive. I started on this with a Trip Planner section but even that got a little cluttered for my liking. I want people to come to the site when they plan their trips for the 2019 coaster! 😉

Finally, I’ve grown to dislike the name of the site for some reason. I’ve thought about names but they all sound even worse… We’ll see.

It’s Been a Fun Season

I had lots of fun this season at Wonderland with all of the special events and new things throughout the park. Check me out on the social media platforms below where I’ll continue to post things throughout the winter.
